Pictures from French Guiana during our September, 2006 SEMs solar eclipse webcast expedition.
Note that the circles indicate where I was.
* Cayenne *
During the flight to French Guiana, the plane stopped in Haiti. Here's the view
from the airport.
During the flight to French Guiana, the plane also stopped in Martinique. Here's
a view from the airplane.
Here's downtown Cayenne, French Guiana (While the largest city in French
Guiana, it is not very big).
We went looking for Sea Turtles on this South Atlantic beach (found eggs, but no
turtles).
* Kourou *
Next stop was the CNET (French Space agency) launch center. Here's a life-size
model of the Ariane 5 rocket. Note the 3 story building.
We took a tour of the launch facility. Here is the launch control room.
Next stop on the tour were the launch pads. Here is the
launch pad for the discontinued Ariane 4 rocket.
Here I am in front of the Ariane 5 launch pad.
The main thing French Guiana is famous for is the Devil's
Island prison. We didn't have time to visit it, but here it
is from the beach. It's not that far off the coast, but the
waters are shark infested.
